Meet Our Founder & CEO
Mark Bartel founded Aretas Group (formerly known as Asset Geotechnical Engineering / AssetGeoEnviro) after senior roles at GHD, Dames & Moore, and Coffey, bringing over 40 years of geotechnical expertise to the business. He has led landmark projects including the M2 Motorway investigations, Eastern Gas Pipeline, Sydney Harbour Islands audit, and alpine infrastructure at Thredbo and Perisher.
Recognised for his G4 competency with Sydney Water assets and expertise in advanced 2D/3D modelling, Mark has built Aretas into a trusted consultancy known for clarity, compliance, and solutions that last. Today, he continues to drive the company’s growth, expanding multi-disciplinary capability and mentoring the next generation of engineers.

Meet Our Design Specialist
Sam Kazemi is an Associate Geotechnical Engineer with over 8 years of international experience across Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia. He has contributed to major projects for Sydney Metro, Sydney Water, and large-scale residential and commercial developments, specialising in foundation and deep excavation design, tunnelling, and landslide risk assessment.
Recognised for his expertise in advanced numerical modelling, Sam uses PLAXIS, MIDAS GTS NX, and SLOPE/W to deliver efficient, data-driven designs.
A Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and NER-registered practitioner, Sam combines analytical precision with a practical, client-focused approach. Today, he plays a key role in Aretas Group’s design leadership—strengthening its geotechnical capability and mentoring the next generation of engineers.

Founded: Asset Geotechnical Engineering Pty Ltd
Founded in 2000, the company set out to deliver high-quality, cost-effective, and responsive geotechnical engineering, filling a gap in the market and quickly building a loyal client base. These core values continue to define the business today.
2019
Established Trading Name: AssetGeoEnviro
The business name of AssetGeoEnviro was established to reflect the growth in environmental services and the strong connection between geotechnical and environmental solutions.
2025
25 Years of Providing Dedicated Service
We’re celebrating 25 years of dedicated service this year. To mark the milestone and to reflect our growth beyond geotechnical into groundwater, environmental, civil, structural, and expert witness services, we have rebranded to Aretas Group. In 2025 and beyond, our focus is on highlighting this multi-disciplinary capability, giving clients seamless access to class-leading expertise under one name, one contract, and one trusted team
2011
Numerical Modelling:
First Project
Our first numerical modelling project, a deep basement excavation beside Burwood Train Station, used PLAXIS 2D to secure Sydney Trains’ approval. Since then, we’ve delivered dozens of 2D and 3D FEM projects with approvals from Sydney Trains, Transport for NSW, Sydney Water, and local Councils.
2024
Number of Projects Successfully Completed: 5,000
In October 2024 we celebrated successful completion of our 5,000th project, serving over 2,000 clients.
