Alpine Coaster

Project Background

The Southern Hemisphere’s first-ever all-weather, year-round Alpine Coaster is a 1.5 km-long gravity-driven ride that offers an exhilarating experience for all ages. Riders can control their speed – reaching up to 40 km/h and experiencing accelerations of up to 19.6 km/s² as they navigate a dynamic course of tunnels, bridges, loops, and elevated tracks weaving through the Snowy Mountains’ alpine terrain.

Constructing a high-speed coaster through steep, forested, and landslide-prone alpine terrain required careful planning and thorough geotechnical engineering. The project’s environmental sensitivity and challenging topography demanded foundation solutions that ensured long-term stability with minimal ecological impact.

Site Conditions & Challenges

Our geotechnical team carried out detailed site investigations and landslide risk assessments, delivering targeted recommendations for foundation design, slope stability, tunnelling, groundwater control, and construction methodology. Throughout construction, we provided ongoing support, including footing inspections and real-time design adjustments to accommodate varying ground conditions.

Aretas’ Approach

Successfully delivered on time and to all required safety and engineering standards including meeting independent safety checks, the Alpine Coaster is now a landmark attraction in the Snowy Mountains. It offers a unique and safe recreational experience while showcasing how smart engineering can bring ambitious tourism infrastructure to life in complex alpine environments.
